What Should You Use to Gain Traction This Winter?
December 07 2017 - Juettner Motors

With winter approaching, many drivers in the Alexandria, MN area have questions about what they need in their car to be sure that they are able to get unstuck in the event that they are spinning their wheels. With that being said, many people also have questions about what they should be using on their driveways and walkways to prevent injuries. There are three traditional materials that many people use to create traction during winter. These materials are: rock salt, sandbox sand, and kitty litter.

  • Rock Salt - Rock salt is a common material used to create traction. It has several key benefits, but some weaknesses as well. The most traditional use of rock salt is on driveways and walkways. Rock salt melts ice and creates traction for people walking on it, however, the salt is susceptible to melting in water. It is often found sold out at stores when the ice hits and it can also be harmful to animal paws and plants.
  • Regular Sandbox Sand Sandbox sand is perhaps one of the cheapest and easiest to find options when it comes to getting cars unstuck and for spreading on driveways and walkways. The sand adds traction when spread on ice and a key element to its effectiveness is that it does not turn into mush.
  • Kitty Litter - Kitty litter is made of clay and is best used when put under tires in order to gain traction. The kitty litter does not melt ice, turns to mush when absorbing too much water, and is more expensive than sand. Kitty litter serves as a good back up to carry around in your car during the winter season.
