Jumper cables are an inexpensive and easily-stored item to keep with your vehicle’s emergency kit. They take basic understanding to master using them but are otherwise uncomplicated. The first thing to recognize is that the two clamps at each end represent a positive and negative charge. The second thing is that, once one is connected, you need to be cautious of touching the other clamp ends to metal surfaces.
Begin using them by attaching the positive, or red cable, to the positive terminal on the dead battery. It should have a "plus" sign on it. Next, attach the black, or negative cable, to the negative terminal with the "minus" sign. Repeat the process with the good battery. Let them charge for a minute or two and rev the engine with the good battery. The vehicle with the dead battery should start after one or two turns.
If the battery hasn’t started after three or four tries, it’s best to stop and get it in for service. There could be a more extensive electrical issue.
